Get a Jon...

This is so totally NOT a sponsored post.

But I wanted to include the below clip, which, to my mind, is hilarious and effective TV advertising. And so true to life...

The lovely blogging sisters, Multiple Mum and Maxabella have both recently posted about DIY, Hire-a-hubby issues and jobs that need doing around the house.

I am sure I have shared with you the fact that I live in a 1970's monstrosity of a house? One that needs a lot of of time, money and inspiration?

And that my lovely husband IS indeed very handy? As I said to Multiple Mum recently -

Lovely husband is handy. He is a geek with bricklayers arms, which can be wonderfully useful (and economic). He can build and tile and plaster and is particularly adept at high class painting and decorating.

Sounds just wonderful, doesn't it?

But its only ever any good IF HE HAS TIME.

No time. Between his work, us, the kids, the garden, and cricket, there is no time left for me to exploit him.

So what is a girl to do? When she has a list of jobs undone?

I have Jon*.

Jon is a jack of pretty much all DIY. He is a chippy by trade, but also has a general builders licence. He can turn his hand to electrics, and has no problem at all with plumbing. Tiling? Consider it done. Tree lopping ? Easy. Gutters need cleaning and fixing? In the blink of an eye.

And he is a darling. The kids and the dogs love him. He is smiley and cheerful, has a cool tool-belt, and he whistles whilst he works.  He drinks his coffee with six sugars, but I forgive him that as he always rinses his mug out. He cleans up after himself and nearly always turns up on time. He never blocks the drive with his van, and can turn his hand to anything. His long ladders are a godsend. Fast and clean...

Jon comes at a price. He invoices on time, and whilst not exorbitant, he is not cheap either.

He is utterly gorgeous and single.

He is a (harmless) flirt.

He is my age and has more than just a little bit of silver fox about him.

The value of Jon?

When I am desperate for a job doing, when its been on my nag list for a year, and my handy husband has still not managed to attend?

When I am frustrated at lack of activity, and when my critical path is getting congested.....

"Lovely husband of mine, shall I call Jon around to give us a quote?"

It spurs my resident handyman into action every. single. time.

Just like the Selly's ad a the start of this post.

Works. Like. A Charm.

Get a Jon.

So worth it.

On every level.

* Not his real name, but he is as gorgeous as Jon Bon Jovi was in Moonlight & Valentino....

  3. Our Hubbys sound the same, tech, geek, computer men with burly builders arms. Sigh.
My Hubby loves to do stuff too, but again time is an issue. Free lance work means clients come before house.
At least while we are renting, not much of it is really up to us. But he did put up a fence for the dog and is great at recycling things instead of buying new.
This weekend though it's my turn. I'm going to paint an old chest of drawers for our daughter.
Mind you, if I had a Jon Bon Jovi at my beck and call... I'm sure I could accidentally on purpose break something!

Love this post Lucy. I don't have a "Jon" but I will say to my husband he has two weeks to fix it and then I will call someone in to do it. He generally finds the time to do it then. I might have to find a "jon: though!

  5. Love this ... my hubby is very handy too but time poor due to our business & essential stuff I think he would love me to get a Jon or maybe an Andrew (a old friend's( I just reconnected with) chippy son.

  6. I WISHED I had a Jon. My husband can do everything himself, he's in the building industry. The problem - time yes BUT also boredom. He gets bored really quickly. He'll fix something up halfway...and then it remains that way for nearly a YEAR!!!! And he starts another project...which would sometimes get finished and sometimes NOT. :( So I need a Jon, to finish his unfinished projects and....for me to feast my eyes on too...hehehehehe

  8. Just love this ad, it brings a smile to my face every time. My hubby is not so handy, but he is resistant to hiring anyone, so I just wait.

Oh, I so wish this would work in my house. I'm "lucky" enough to have a husband who is willing to try fixing anything and everything and he finds the time to do it. Unfortunately we usually have to get professionals in afterwards to fix his fixes!

  10. Lucy, you give me totally awesome advice :) I will look into finding a Jon. The utterly gorgeous and single bit is a key factor, no? [Andrew is pretty clever really, he too just needs 'motivation' most of the time :)]

  13. My husband is often away. He can be handy (sometimes) but is so flippin' slow. FAR OUT! I like to move in fast forward and he likes to move in rewind! I often have to "rent a husband" in the form of BIL or close friends to help me out when I need it. Oh, my Dad is a builder so is VERY handy but he's been in Africa for 5 years so not much help from over there. LOL

  14. You had me at the picture of JBJ. If only he was here for me. For the house jobs, of course. What else would I mean?

  17. Haha, I'm giggling, as lovely husband is an Andrew. But a young son - that sounds very appealing!

  21. Oh no, Kelly, now that would be frustrating as it must be time consuming?!

  22. Tab, get a Jon. My Jon thinks the world shines out of my arse. (The feeling is mutual.) It's wonderful for the ego if nothing else!

  23. Taryn, you would so totally his type too - he loves little babies...

  24. It hits them in the $$ and also in the pride....

  25. The other bonus of renting someone else - you pay them. Done. No pandering to the husbands ego for hte next two weeks....

    ReplyDelete
  26. Of course.. What else?! xx

  27. I smile every time I see that ad on tv I'm sure its put the fear into men all over Aussie!

  28. Inspired thinking Lucy! I definitely need a 'Jon'. My husband is really handy, but in true geek form never seems to find the time to do the things that need doing..

  32. LOL I want a Jon! My old standby though is to start a project myself. Hubs always comes to see what I'm doing and takes over. Works. Every. Time

My husband is my 'Jon', he works 6am to 2pm then comes home and spends hours, HOURS I tell you, on this riduculous renovator of ours!! But, nothing ever gets finished! He starts something, gets sick of it, starts something else...or worse...rips apart what he has just finished because he's not happy with it. Therefore, we have holes in walls, unfinished floorboards, steps going nowhere in the backyard!
I think I need a Jon to finish my Jon's work!!

  36. Yup - I really need to get myself a Jon! lol
